With more than 40 years in Denver, Jan Nelsen specializes in city-close properties.  To many, she is known as “DenverJan” for her knowledge of what’s happening in Denver and having her finger on the pulse. THE NELSEN GROUP of KENTWOOD CITY PROPERTIES,  one of the top real estate agencies in Denver, Jan and her Broker Associate Molly Weiss, a Denver Native, love to educate clients on Denver and its surroundings.  Both are full of energy and make it their business to know their clients, the neighborhoods and all that entails in making their clients happy.  THE SCOUT GUIDE DENVER has decided to turn the tables on Jan and Molly and find out not only about their latest listings, but what they love about Denver’s hippest neighborhoods and their favorite local jaunts.

This super special three-story townhome is located in the Golden Triangle. When connected, the boundaries of Speer Boulevard, Colfax Avenue and Lincoln Avenue are the shape of a triangle.  This townhome is brand new construction with four outdoor spaces, large living spaces, 3 bedrooms, 3 ½ baths and a rooftop deck with unbelievable views. A stone’s throw from the DENVER ART MUSEUM, THE DENVER LIBRARY, THE ART HOTEL, and the upcoming KIRKLAND MUSEUM OF FINE AND DECORATIVE ARTS, this neighborhood has everything in walking distance: restaurants, salons, boutiques and more! Plus, you can commute to other great areas such as: DOWNTOWN DENVER, the ART DISTRICT ON SANTA FE and Cherry Creek, in less than 10 minutes.  Cyclists, jump on the CHERRY CREEK BIKE PATH and get to Lodo in 5 minutes and Cherry Creek North in 15 minutes. Location: 1024 Bannock Street, Denver, CO 80211//Photography courtesy of TERI FOTHERINGHAM

What is your favorite lunch spot in the neighborhood?

“I love PARSLEY. It is a tiny spot with lunch fare made from the freshest ingredients from scratch: delicious salads, sandwiches and an array of soups, fresh juice specialty drinks. Their “textured tuna” is so yummy. Location: 11th and Cherokee (2 blocks from 1024 Bannock Street)

Where would you recommend shopping for the home?

I’ve always loved DJUNA on 9th and Broadway.  This shop used to be in Cherry Creek, but moved to The Golden Triangle a few years ago. Their clients appreciate being surrounded by not only beautiful things, but things that are eclectic, interesting and unique.//Photography courtesy of DJUNA

And my next very favorite shop is URBAN ROOTS.  Urban Roots is a curated shop that creates and cultivates small garden landscapes for urban living spaces. Location: 1000 Acoma Street – right around the corner from our new listing on Bannock Street.//Photography courtesy of URBAN ROOTS

Where do you like shopping for clothing?

I have loved shopping at WARDROBE WORKS.  This specialty shop has “the edge” on new and pre-owned, top designer label women’s clothing and accessories. They represent top of the line designers like Prada, Chanel and Armani as well as some of the most talented local artists and designers. Location: West 12th Avenue

If you were hosting a dinner party, where would you shop for specialty food items?

TONY’S MARKET is truly a gourmet city market. The finest meats, poultry and fish in town.  They have pre-made gourmet hors d’oeuvres in the freezer section that are the crème-de-la-crème.  Fresh breads, desserts, truly hard-to-find specialty food items, a wonderful cheese selection and lots of great service everywhere in the store. I make it there at least once a week. Location: 950 Broadway//Photography courtesy of TONY’S MARKET

And the best place for desserts in the area?

GATEAUX BAKERY is the best in town!  Need I say more?//Photography courtesy of GATEAUX PASTRIES

FUN WITH JAN:

What is your favorite patio for light bites and cocktails in the summer?

I have been enjoying AVANTI in Lohi.  The second level has a big rooftop deck with super gorgeous views of the city.  Downstairs they have delicious pizza, it’s really casual, filled with neighborhood peep’s.

What are your favorite Sunday activities?

image

I make my coffee and read part of the New York Times.  My dog follows me around until I take him for a walk. We walk around the HIGHLANDS, over the bridge to PLATTE STREET, walk through COMMON’S PARK and grab a coffee drink at INK! COFFEE AT RIVERFRONT PARK. There is going to be a grand scale farmer’s market with Boulder farmers’ produce and items coming soon at UNION STATION. That would be our next stop.  I usually have open houses in the afternoon from 2pm-4pm, but then I get home and make a nice dinner with my son, Sean on Sundays.//Photography courtesy of CASESTUDIES.ULI.ORG

This perfect family home in the Hilltop neighborhood recently sold!  With 4 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms upstairs – difficult to find in Hilltop.  A great family home with an open floor plan in the kitchen, a great room and another bonus room which can be used as a card/game room or set up homework stations.//Photography courtesy of TERI FOTHERINGHAM

When you have guests in town, what hotel do you recommend?

I would probably recommend something in Cherry Creek like the JW Marriott- such a walkable location.  But, I am really excited for the newest and chicest boutique hotel, HALCYON HOTEL, to open in early summer.  It is going to be incredible!

What is your favorite new local coffee shop in the area?

CRUMB CAFE is an adorable spot with great natural light, delightful staff and delicious goodies.  It is a great place to take kids for a sweet treat (their cupcakes are yummy) or get your caffeine fix. Location: Cedar and Holly//Photography courtesy of CRUMB CAFE

What is your favorite historical place in the area?

One of our meeting spots in high school was at the SUNDIAL AT CRANMER PARK. The history of the sundial goes back to 1941.  Over the years, we’ve learned that the sundial and structure was not built on a firm foundation, causing it damage.  Currently, there is a campaign to raise money to correct the issue. What would be your go-to dinner restaurant in this neighborhood?

image

LOCANDA DEL BORGO is a delicious, Italian neighborhood restaurant.  The interior is cozy with exposed brick walls and dim lights.  There is also a nice outdoor space along the side of the restaurant for al fresco dining. Location: 3rd and Holly

FUN WITH MOLLY:

What is your favorite patio for light bites and cocktails in the summer?

Anywhere that is kid friendly.  We enjoy going to KAOS in Platt Park during the summer. Their back patio is very laid back- perfect spot for wine or beer, pizza and salad and if the kids are really good, then dessert will have to be “Grandma’s Chocolate Cake”.  They often have live music outside which is a bonus for parents and kids.

What are your favorite Sunday activities?

image

We try to make Sunday mornings family days.  During the summer, we are hiking with our son and Wheaten Terrier.  We stay close to Denver so we can get back for our son’s afternoon nap.  Some of our go to hikes include: MAXWELL FALLS IN EVERGREEN (it was actually on this hike where we decided to name our son, Maxwell) and MEYER RANCH PARK IN CONIFER.//Photography courtesy ofDAYSHIKENEARDENVER.COM

Where would you shop to go on a beach vacation?

Fortunately, we get to take a beach vacation each summer.  We go to Nantucket- a small island off the coast of Massachusetts.  There is great shopping there, but you always need some items before you get there.  I did just get an amazing navy and white striped suit with a big bow on it from Kate Spade- so cute!
